McDonald’s Shows Its Calories Now, Betting That “Delicious” Wins Over “Nutritious.”

When McDonald’s tells people on the East Coast what the calories are, the people go ahead and order what they were going to order anyway. So out the initiative rolls, nationwide.

I don’t think it’s cynical, really, for McDonald’s to announce calories being listed right where you order their food. I think it’s good.

But I do think they’ve calculated they can be a leader, get a lot of good will, and not suffer a thing. Check out this, from AP:

“In cities such as New York and Philadelphia where posting calorie information is already required, however, [McDonald’s USA President Jan] Fields notes that the information has not changed what customers choose to order. ”When it’s all said and done, the menu mix doesn’t change,” she said. “But I do think people feel better knowing this information.”

So it’s not Jan’s fault if I balloon up despite the calories information being right there under my nose.
